This house has been demolished in the past week and the lots will be cleared and fill hauled in to make them ready for new houses. Our Horizons groups are moving ahead with the objectives in the strategic plan. The new OAIC has obtained these 4 lots from the county and will make them available for free to anyone that will build a new house and the committee is also looking into placing a governor’s house on two of the lots. It takes 2 lots to build a house so we now have room for 2 new houses. We are working with the county commission and some absentee landowners to obtain more lots in town. There has only been one new house built in Oldham in the past 35-40 years so we want to encourage development and hope that free improved lots will attract interest in building in the community. There would be some after pictures but we are currently snowbound with this late spring snowstorm so I wasn’t able to get the after photos. Check back later and track the progress.

With an election just one week ago and a strong voter turnout we are forward Oldham. Spring is here and we are moving forward with new leaders on our city council. More people are comming out when we ask for help on projects in our community. Horizons has helped to open our eyes to all who live here and make this their home . Please don’t feel you have to be asked to help with a project, come on out and be a part of community clean-up night. We all work together young and old to better our town and community. If you have a project and need a little more help than what you can do yourself, call on a Horizons leader or your city council members. Please remember to join us for clean-up night Friday April 25th. Many hands make for lighter work. We will have food and fellowship to follow. See you there! connie b

This article is submitted by Sandy Smith of Oldham:
The Oldham Gym was a very busy place to be on Tuesday April 8th….along with the “Military Display” voting for a new Mayor and a Ward 1 Council Member started the day off at 7:00 a.m. Blood Services truck then pulled into the parking lot about 1:00 to get ready for the 2nd Annual Auxiliary Blood Drive…then at 2:30 you could smell coffee being made in the kitchen as some ladies were setting up goodies for the “Community Gathering Cofffee Time” which they were hosting free that afternoon to give the community member a place to gather and visit with their neighbors and friends! Blood is life giving….and we had many community members who came to give their blood between the hours of 2:30-6:30. Blood Services personal were very please with the good turn out from the Oldham community and they told us how much they enjoyed all the goodies in the kitchen!
By 7:30 the votes were counted, the gym cleaned up and Oldham had a new Mayor….Roger Eide…Congratulations! Congratulations also to John Pester who will be representing Ward 1.
The Oldham American Legion Auxiliary want to thank everyone who made our 2nd Annual Blood Drive a success….and thanks to the community members who came and enjoyed visiting over the goodies in the kitchen! Thank-you also to the community members who came out and voted…..THANK-YOU to all who have served “Our Country” in the past and present allowing us to live in a country that is FREE ….where we do have the freedom to vote!

Greetings from the Bickett home. Well this is our home ,however we are getting Home Away from Home ready for you. Mike and I have been busy this winter cleaning and fixing on our rental home we purchased. We are getting anxious to get it done and have an open house. We would like to be able to rent it short term to fishermen, hunters or someone back for a visit. Thanks to the Horizons program we were inspired to go ahead and purchase the home and start this process. We have completely gutted the kitichen and done some other renovations. We would love to hear from you if you are interested in renting for a night or two. We would like to have it ready to go by May 1st. I will try to keep everyone informed on our progress. Take care and have a great week.

What a way to wake up. They are telling us that a blizzard with up to 12 inches of snow could hit by nightfall. Well when you live in Oldham S.D you can expect anything. We have had a good week here in Oldham. Tuesdays blood drive brought many people in to town. Along with that Sandy Smith had a wonderful display of millitary photos and memirobillia. Thank You Sandy! Also congratulations to our new mayor Roger Eide and council members John Pester and Louise Duffy. Be sure to come to Oldham on Sunday for the wild game feed at the Oldham Saloon 12-2. This is a fundraiser for the Oldham Fire Dept. and Potato Days in August.

The Horizons Committees have been busy building partnerships and involving many groups and organizations in our efforts to address poverty in Oldham. The City council was asked to pay for half of the cost of the citywide clean up on May 2 which they agreed to do. The county commission has deeded property over to OAIC for the housing committee, the school district is allowing the use of the school gym for meetings and allowing internet to be installed for the Horizons group. Alliance Communications is installing and providing free high speed internet into the school gym for Horizons. Horizons Health Care Systems will be partnering with the community for health screenings and health education. Horizons and ORR students partnered together to have a food drive for the food bank. That involves many groups in the community including the churches and some other groups that support the food bank. Many other possibilities are being explored.

The Horizons steering committee contacted the local ISP provider for Oldham and asked for help with making blogging access available to those in the community that don’t have access to the internet or have dial up internet. Alliance Communications has agreed to install high speed internet access into the school gymnasium in Oldham and will provide the internet service free to the Horizons committees. The installation will be done in the next couple of weeks and the group is looking for computers and we will hopefully get started with blog nights and updates for the Oldham website.

Oldham made the effort to apply for the Tradition of Caring Grant offered by Kelo-Land Television. Kelo-Land was offering $150,000 in grants in the form of public service announcements. Oldham unfortunately was not chosen for the grant but as recognition to the community for our efforts, Kelo-Land is adding a link to the Oldham website on their website. This will be an incentive for us to keep it updated and add to the information available as the Kelo-Land site is the most visited website in the region. Maybe not as good as a PSA but certainly an opportunity for Oldham to capitalize on our efforts.
