From a Dilapidated Property to a Mess to Lots Ready for Homes

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

It has been a long time coming but we got the Oldham Area Improvement Corporation property cleaned up and it is ready for homes. The OAIC will give the lot to anyone who will build a single family home. You can’t get a much better deal than that.

Oldham Area Improvement Corporation is off and running. Well at least the OAIC has made another step forward in our strategic plan. The house is gone, the foundations are cleaned up and hauled away and the lots are ready for houses. There are a total of 6 lots which it takes 2 lots for a house so we have 3 house lots available for anyone willing to build a single family dwelling. Oh did I mention “FREE” lots available. This will be a major advantage for anyone wanting to build a new home. Lots in Brookings, Madison, Sioux Fall, Watertown and all the other large communities can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $40,000 and even more in some cases. Ours are going to be free to anyone building a single family dwelling. That will level the playing field when it comes to commutes too. Anyone interested in the lots can contact the OAIC or visit the Oldham website and email us.

Oldham Potato Days a Success

Potato Days was a big success again this year. We had several new activities happening including one that has gotten Oldham on the web. We had a remote controlled model airplane show this year. You can check it out on YouTube. Just type “Oldham model airplane show 2008″ in Google and it should take you there. There are three segments of 10 minutes each and you sill see a lot of children included. My grandchildren are in there too!!! It was great to see many people return to the town and got many good comments on our website and the community blog. The link from the website to the blog has been used and we have many who have moved away from Oldham that have been able to keep up on some of the happenings by using the blog. I guess we all need to let that be a lesson on the power of the internet.

Interesting Blogs

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

I have a little more time these days so I come home today and read some of the blogs from other communities. It is fun to see what other communities have done. I was especialy interested in the one at Estelline and their farmers market. That is one thing that many of our residents of the community here in Oldham have expressed an interest in. Perhaps when Glen gets the convience store up and going we can have some produce and items of local intrest for sale there. I also feel that Glen has been very responsive and open to ideas. Please feel free to give him your ideas and the things you would like to see at the store. One of the things I have learned through this process is everyones opinion needs to be expressed and if we all work for the better of our community it will be a better community. We are small, but team work will keep us together and hopefully we can grow and be a thriving small community in years to come.
Keep reading the blogs and maybe a brain storm will hit you and something new will come from your mind. Remember we are all a part of this community and everyones opinion counts. Don’t wait for someone else to start it. Get out and GET’ER DONE!

Tour De Kota coming through!

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

We will once again have the oportunity to host many riders in the Tour De Kota bike ride. We will have many of the same food booths as last year as they were big hits. {Especially the pie!} If your group or orginization from Oldham would like to help, please contact Connie B 482-8639 for more info. We especially encourage all local people to come out for lunch that day and visit with the riders, see their bikes, and promote our town. This is a great way to show our pride and tell of some of the sights in our area. See you there!

It’s A beautiful Morning!

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Hurrah! The sun is shinning and it’s going to be a cool but beautiful day in Oldham! We are working on the floors of “Home Away from Home” today. They have been stripped and will be sanded today. Hopefully by next week we can start the process of putting the house back together. [ Seems like I have said that before] The plumbing and electricial are wrapping up, so the floors and decorating are left. The latter being my favorite part. We are hoping to have an Open House Memorial week-end. Keep watching the blog for more updates.

Demolition in Progress

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

This is one of the first steps by the Horizons group and the OAIC toward accomplishing our strategic goals. This is the first house to be demolished to make building lots available free to anyone who will build a house on the lots. Once the clean up is completed there will be 4 lots available with room for 2 houses. The OAIC is also looking into the governor’s housing program and some other possible funding sources to get a jump start on development of affordable housing options. Check back later for more updates and after pictures.
